Book Review: The Five People You Meet In Heaven by Mitch Albom

Mitch Albom

Dear Reader,

"The Five People You Meet In Heaven", is a book you pick up on the day when you're searching for the meaning of life. Yes, I must admit that it's emotionally intense and will stir you up. But, I also must say that you will struggle to put it down once you pick this up.

This is a short and quick read. This is the kind of book you bring up in conversation or chat about with another book nerd (hopefully wise) like yourselves when boasting of your To Be Read booklist. And for the same reason, I decided to review this one - one of my all time favourite books!

An FYI- It's funny; I picked this book up by chance (just because it was on sale)- never had heard about it before.

Review

The book "Five People You Meet In Heavenis the story of Eddie, an 83-year-old man who finds himself in heaven after his death. In heaven, Eddie meets five people who profoundly impact his life or are impacted by him - in ways he hadn't imagined. Along the journey in heaven, Eddie learns lessons about life, love, loss, and redemption.

And as you read this book - you will find it to be an insightful, emotional fiction read. Maybe it will make you reflect on the relationships you have in your own life and what they mean to you. What stood out to me the most was Eddie learns about his life's impact after he passes away - a little too late. I feel that this is the nature of life after all. We often only appreciate what we had once we've lost it. Do you think so too?

"Sometimes when you sacrifice something precious, you’re not really losing it. You’re just passing it on to someone else."  - Mitch Albom, The Five People You Meet In Heaven

Another thing that really resonated with me was the portrayal of interconnectedness of human life by Mitch Albom. This interconnected spans beyond the immediate relationships - it includes even the ones we may not realize but exist. Through Eddie's journey, Albom powerfully demonstrates how the smallest moments and interactions can ripple out and shape our lives and the lives of those around us. To me, this book serves as a soulful reminder that every action matters, and each action has an more impact than we realize.

Lastly, the language is clear and straightforward, yet it is incredibly moving and can evoke a wide range of emotions in readers - joy, sadness, love, and even tears. It provides a perspective on life that anyone can relate to. This page turner touched my heart and soul, and I can't see why it won't do the same for you. The non-chronological order of events adds to the appeal of this quick read- and it adds an element of intrigue. Mitch Albom's writing is accessible and poignant, and Eddie's experiences in the afterlife are truly captivating. It's a rare balance that allows for both - the emotional depth and the clarity of expression.

This is the kind of read that stays with you, making you ponder about the mysteries of life. Like I said before, this book is not for a regular day. "The Five People You Meet In Heavenhas quickly become one of my favourite books.
